About
A notebook kept where other people can read it.
I am Mara Ellison, and this is the notebook I keep in public.
For about eleven years I have written in the early morning — first in paper notebooks, then in a document I leave open overnight so there is never a blank page waiting for me at half five. Most of what comes out of that hour is private, unfinished, or wrong. Longhand is the small fraction that turned out to be worth saying to somebody else.
What is here
Short essays about the practice rather than the product: how to start a piece, how to write badly enough to get anywhere, what notebooks actually preserve, and the difficult business of stopping. I am not interested in productivity advice. I am interested in attention — what it costs, where it goes, and what it feels like when it finally lands on the page.
Nothing here is finished. It has just stopped improving under my hands, which is the only kind of finished I have ever managed.
New entries appear when they are ready, which is roughly once a month. There is no schedule and no newsletter. If you find something useful in here, the best thing you can do with it is go and write your own bad first draft.
